About Star Awards

Recognising People in the Tourism Industry

The tourism industry is considered as one of the pillars of the Maltese economy, and with good reason. In the year 2017, the total inbound visitors during January to December amounted to 2,314,596 increasing by 16.4% or by 326,149 visitors when compared to year 2016, with 73.0% of inbound tourists being first-time visitors, recording a growth rate of 20.8%. These figures are staggering when one takes into consideration the small size of the Maltese islands and their resident population. It is also little wonder that over the years, the government as well as the private sector have invested and continue to invest in this important industry. Besides being a prime source of foreign earnings into the national economy, tourism is also a major employer. In fact, thousands of individuals are actively engaged in tourism related services, both directly and indirectly. All this reflects how human resources are the true foundation of the tourism sector. It is with this in mind that the Malta Tourism Authority sought a way to acknowledge the sterling effort made by many and awarding those who shine best.

The establishment of the Special Thanks And Recognition (STAR) Award thirteen years ago was a way of recognising outstanding people who work in the tourism industry who offer exceptional service and hospitality to tourists. During the year 2017, the Malta Tourism Authority received 13,000 nominations from tourists acclaiming their positive experiences and complimenting the service and hospitality they received during their stay in Malta. Anyone can be nominated for a STAR Award and both tourists and locals are eligible to send a nomination. Nomination forms are available at Tourist Information Offices, hotels, museums and visitor attraction sites. Nominations can also be submitted online from this website or by scanning the QR code on the form itself.

Businesses are encouraged to participate by collecting nomination forms from the Malta Tourism Authority or make arrangements to have them delivered. From then on, it's the tourists themselves who drive the process by nominating those individuals who made their stay in Malta special.
